Two separate patient and
doctor/clinician education manuals provide a pictorial review of the
inter-relationships of the TMJ to the head/neck area. They reveal its intricate
and sensitive nature related to overall musculoskeletal balance. The books show
drawings and charts to explain TMJ related head/neck/orofacial pain problems.
The drawings/figures are directly from x-ray tracings and are anatomically
accurate. Photographic documentation is extensive throughout the books.
Referred pain charting and mapping from teeth and muscle regions are also
provided.
The types of diagnostics and treatment modalities
for TMJ and orofacial pain management are detailed, including radiographic
imaging, splints, and jaw neuromuscular physiotherapies. The texts incorporate
snoring and sleep apnea management and cite currently accepted therapies, from
C-PAP and intraoral appliances, to surgical indications. The need for
integrating a medical and dental team approach, with sleep
studies/polysomnography is emphasized. Exercise systems for craniofacial muscle
balancing and TMJ mobilization are also featured. Numerous references from the
scientific literature are given. Chapters in each of these texts include:
- *Clinical aspects of pain evaluation: Basic anatomy
and function
- *Posture considerations in head, neck, and facial
pain
- *TMJ/TMD and craniofacial pain: Diagnosis and
treatment
- *Legal and insurance issues in management of head,
neck, TMJ injury
- *Snoring/sleep apnea and treatment with intraoral
appliances
