Sports Dentistry

Reprint Volume Available on Sports Dentistry Publication
By Stephen David Smith, D.M.D., Paoli PA.

There has been a heightened interest in Sports Dentistry with the August 2009 release of the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry. In this supplement Vol. 30, special issue # 2, the research papers focused on current studies on effects of mouthpiece use, performance- enhancing mouthwear, protective appliances, and the future of athletic performance. Simultaneous with this is the Fall, 2009 announcement of custom mouthpieces for performance in various sports. The cushioning affect on brain protection and TMJ stability, concussion prevention, as well as safety of teeth and jaw, are subjects which have been in the scientific literature, supporting the "new bite technology".

Dr Stephen Smith did original research on Sports Dentistry a number of years ago. The initial kinesiologic studies with the Philadelphia Eagles were published in two issues of the New York State Dental Journal; a separate paper in the early 1980's was published in the National Athletic Trainers Journal ( "Protection and Performance from Mouthguards and Bite Splints"). These were collected along with other clinical observations and recommendations for the Sports community. Dr Smith wrote a 147 page book:

"Monograph: Dentistry in Sports Medicine" published by Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Press.

Currently Dr. Smith has expanded his patients' treatment of TMD Temporomandibular Disorders and Obstructive Sleep Apnea referrals, to include Sports protection and athletic performance enhancement with special mouthpieces.
